5:00PM - Strange Answers: "How do you make fake human sashimi?"

severed thumb 07, originally uploaded by Boju.

The question of the day here at Dapper Cadaver was "How do you make fake human sashimi?"

It's a familiar horror movie set up, knife wielding maniac slices some choice parts off their victim, nothing unusual there, but the part two of this gruesome torture involves slicing the bits and pieces thin. There will be close ups. And the budget is practically non existent.

If budget allows, pieces can be custom fabricated so there's meat and bone looking material built right in, but budget didn't allow this time so we need to go with off the shelf pieces.

One of the pieces getting cut off is the thumb. Now the detail on our thumbs is great, you can see the pores and even take a fingerprint. Add a nail, and you got a close up ready piece. Skin tone is going to be repainted to match their actor. The problem though is the thumb is hollow vinyl. How do you cut it thin without spoiling the illusion.

We came up with 2 possible solutions.

The first involves stuffing the thumb with meat and bone so you can cut into it and see the gore inside. It's good because you can maintain a steady shot, but you'll have to hold it carefully so the skin doesn't slip and spoil the illusion.

The more classic effect is the old switcheroo. Knife maniac goes for actor and the first switch is pulling off the fake thumb for the real thumb. The maniac slams the thumb down on a table - close up on bloody thumb - then cut to close up of the knife coming down. Switch the fake thumb for a similar piece of meat, say a raw chicken wing, the fat part with the single bone inside and a thumbnail glued on, but don't do a close up. The maniac starts cutting, you can go as thin as you want and it will look real because it is real. Leave the damaged nail for even more impact.

Here's a tip, if your character is female, give her a noticeable nail polish, then match the nail polish on the fake finger. It keeps it clear whose parts your dealing with. Worked in The Big Lebowski.

Also!!! Another way you can help out - just stop by your local record shop and ask them to carry All Grown Up the Movie from Psyko Punk Productions!!!

7:13PM - The Legend of Dinosaurs And Monster Birds

Well, Netflix delivered unto me a film I have been aching, for no good reason, to see for ages:

The Legend of Dinosaurs and Monster Birds

Now, I had been warned that it was bad. I had been warned it was terrible.

But I had no idea!

Seldom have I seen a movie so consistently unable to do anything right. It hurts, my friends, and damn it when it comes to movies like this I am a masochist. This thing could not have hurt me more if I had asked it to spank me harder.

I spent every other minute of this film loudly shouting, in confused and bewildered indignation: "What the fuck?!"

Some legend you turned out to be...Collapse )

3:08AM - new doc about cult b-movie

Hey guys!

Just wanted to let you know about a new documentary that's being made about Tom Graeff's Teenagers from Outer Space. The film, The Boy From Out of This World, reveals the ambition and tragedy behind the 1959 cult film. It's kind of like a "true" version of Tom Burton's Ed Wood.

Interviewees include surviving cast members of the film, scholars and b-movie aficionados like Michael J. Nelson of MST3K, and filmmakers like Lloyd Kaufman and Roger Corman.

The main site is Tom Graeff .org, and there's a blog about the research going on at Tom Graeff's Teenagers From Outer Space @ Blogspot that includes a number of interesting essays and interview summaries.

If any of you have interest in Tom Graeff, Teenagers from Outer Space, B-movies, or sci-fi cinema, please check out and support the project by leaving comments on the blog and the film's IMDB page.

Thanks! Keep watching the skies!

Have you ever seen the movie Hard Rock Zombies? It has bad hair and music, a nude lady with a knife, an old lady who gets hairy once in a while, midgets, zombies, and ghouls. It makes absolutely no sense, and I am selling a VHS copy of it right here.

3:45PM - Some thoughts on King Kong vs. Godzilla and King Kong Escapes...

I did this on my journal a while back and I'd posted it a few other places, but thought it might fit here as well.

Thoughts on King Kong vs. Godzilla:

--How exactly does one drive a submarine into an f-ing iceberg? Hello, solid friggin' object! Sonar?! Hello?!

--Still, nothing is as badass as Godzilla bashing his way out of an iceberg.

--Gotta love a movie where not only do the explorers give natives cigarettes, they give said cigarettes to the adults and the children. Lung cancer and nicotene addiction for everyone!

Oh, and I have loads more...Collapse )

Unlike King Kong vs. Godzilla, I had only seen like the first fourth of King Kong Escapes before I got the DVD, but oh do I have a few thoughts.

--The U.S. Distributors this time weren't stupid enough to replace Akira Ifukube's score. It's a delightful beginning to the film.

--Couldn't they possibly have found a LESS annoying voice actor for Lt. Susan Watson?

--I bet the American Commander instructed the sub's helmsmen to drive it into a rock slide just so they could stop at Mondo Island.

--Where is Mondo Island, anyways? Next to Hepcat Trench and Daddio Reef?

--Dr. Who rocks. He's like a Bond villain who decided that British superspies weren't challenging enoough, so he decided to take on a 60-foot gorilla instead.

King Kong in a death battle w/ his mechanical double!Collapse )

On a similar note, if anybody reads this makes bumper stickers, I have an idea for an offensive bumper sticker.

Put a picture of King Kong on top of the Empire State Building and next to it put the words, "KING KONG DIED FOR OUR SINS!"

It's genius!!!

5:53PM - Elvira Videos: Opinions...?

Does anybody here have any of Elvira's Thriller Video tapes? Midnight Madness tapes? Box of Horror DVD set? What are your thoughts? Likes? Dislikes?

I recently picked up the Thriller Video version of Silent Scream for $.80 at the local charity thrift store. On the whole I liked it, but was annoyed by the facts that is was edited down to one hour including host segments and that there was no intermission. I also am waiting on a copy of The Witching Time from the Thriller Video series (starring Patty Quinn, aka Magenta of RHPS. FANDOMS COLLIDE!).

I am most interested to know if Midnight Madness tapes or the Box of Horror DVD set feature one or more intermissions, or if the host segments just sandwich the movie like in the Thriller Video tapes. Also, looking for a heads up on any Thriller Videos that may be a 'Must See' in your opinion.

10:59AM - The Weirder the Better

Let me introduce myself, I make, rent, and sell horror and haunted house props in Los Angeles. I have corpses, body parts, bones, and headstones piled on every flat surface and crammed into every crevace of my house. My neighbors have called the cops on me on multiple occasions, including one full out SWAT team because I have a tendancy to take my work home with me.
It's a good life though, I've worked on some of the weirdest projects imaginable, and chatted with the folks who do the real creepy work.
So I want the live journal community to know, if you ever need to buy a dead body, or maybe just rent one for the weekend, I'm your man. Go ahead, ask for anything, the weirder the better.
I also perform in some of these B movies. Here's a shot of me in the new "Night of the Living Dead 3D"

And I drive a hearse that's been used in all kinds of productions, including one porn.

I'm also a total flickr junky, and started a community for scream queens and other beautiful horrors.

So that's my introduction, stay tuned for updates on all manner of B movies in production and whatever atrocities I'm cooking up in my shop.
